FAFSA Completion: Screening & Eligibility

SPAN helps school districts, students and their families find and obtain assistance that pays for post-secondary education, including completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and certification or eligibility for the Tuition Incentive Program (TIP). After January 1, students can begin completing their online applications using the government FAFSA website! Local district school guidance counseling personnel can find out which of their enrolled high school seniors have already completed the task by participating in an annual screening performed by SPAN. Names are carefully screened using a partnership between the Office of Students, Scholarships and Grants (SSG). Once screening is complete, results of completion are shared back with our local districts. Counselors are encouraged to talk to their enrolled seniors about the importance of completing a FAFSA application. Most higher education institutions would like the FAFSA completed prior to March 1 to ensure students can take advantage of plentiful student aid packages, however many will accept a completed FAFSA application up to 4 weeks prior to the date of the college enrollment.

Scholarship Completion

The Shiawassee Community Foundation administers postsecondary scholarship and grant every year. The scholarship  cycle begins December 1st of each year and the scholarship deadlines vary by   scholarship. The Shiawassee Community Foundation requires scholarship applicants to submit a FAFSA and fill out a general scholarship applcation as well as more detailed information depending upon each scholarship funds requirements. More information can be found here.

College Application Week

The American College Application Campaign, launched by the American Council on Education (ACE), is a national effort to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students who pursue a postsecondary education. The purpose is to help high school seniors navigate the college admissions process and ensure that each participating student submits at least one admissions application. Special focus is placed on assisting students who would be the first in their families to attend college and students who may not have otherwise seriously considered applying to college.

Inspired by the national concept, the purpose of Michigan College Application Week is to target low-income students, first-generation college going students, and those who would have not otherwise considered college. Our goal is to help all graduating high school seniors navigate the complex college admissions process and provide the opportunity to complete at least one application by the conclusion of Michigan College Application Week at host high schools. While some colleges and universities encourage seniors to apply before November 1 each year, the Campaign encourages states to select a week in November to serve as the conclusion and celebration of the college application season.
